La Garenne is situated in the heart of Charente Maritime, making it easy to reach many of the main tourist attractions. We have put together some of the most interesting tourist attractions nearby, but if you have any special interests please ask, we will be happy to help.
St Jean D'Angely is 20 minutes away by car and is absolutely stunning. The town includes three squares with outdoor cafes and restaurants, beautiful buildings and a historical cathedral. There is also a lake with paddle boats, play area, crazy golf and a fantastic indoor swimming pool with slides, bubble bath and jacuzzi.
We are surrounded by many other small lakes with safe beach and enclosed swimming areas. Many have boats to hire, playgrounds and restaurants - tell us what you are looking for and we will be happy to recommend the perfect place to spend a day.
Just 45 minutes away is Cognac and the famous distillery tours, the roman city of Saintes with its beautiful amphitheatre, and the Charente river where it is possible to rent a boat and sail up the river.
The beautiful atlantic coast is just one hour away with its endless sandy beaches and dunes. Most of the beaches are very child friendly.
If you fancy something a bit more bustling, but still incredibly beautiful and charming, then the maritime city of La Rochelle is worth a trip. Complete with quaint cobbled streets, beautiful buildings, numerous shops and famous fish restaurants you can easily spend a day there.
The nearby island of Ile de Re, with its charming small harbour towns, is stunning. The island has a purpose built biking trail system, fantastic for family biking. Both Ile de Re and La Rochelle are 1hr 15 min away by car.
We also discovered a fantastic island last summer called Ile d'Aix. Time has stopped on this island and you can only access the island by ferry, no cars are allowed. It is the ideal place to relax on the beach, visit the cafes and fish restaurants, or rent a bike and explore the whole of the charming small island. Make sure you enjoy a fresh fish dish practically served straight from the sea.
45 minutes to the north is the area known as Marais Poitevin. It is absolutely beautifull and we cannot recommend a more tranquil place to be. You can rent rowing boats bring your picnique and just enjoy while slowly moving trough the marsh land. There are also places to stop and have a meal or a aperitif.
The children will love this day out as well as adults.
